Description
This course studies the concept of masculinities and its representation in Latin American literature. It introduces students to the field of men studies and its intersections with feminist, postcolonial and queer theories. We will focus our study on the following questions: What does it mean to be a man? How has the conceptualization of masculinity developed and changed over time? What can literature tell us about gender, representation, and social construction in América Latina? What is hegemonic masculinity? How is it depicted and challenged by other gender constructions? Readings include novels, short stories, poems, films as well as theoretical readings of different disciplines such as sociology, psychology, and cultural anthropology.
